Passive squating is underrated
Wednesday, 08 April 2009 12:11

Squatting down (not under a weight) and resting in the bottom of the squat position is highly underrated.  For some reason, people seem to think of it as a lowly position to be in.  Not low in regard to physical position, but rather as a low class thing to do.  Let me change your mind about this useful position.

A squat is good for many things, but it really is great for lengthening/stretching out many muscle groups at one time.  What gets stretched?

  • the bottoms of the feet (plantar fascia)
  • flexors of the foot and ankle (calf muscles and toe flexors)
  • the top portion of the hamstrings
  • the quads
  • some of gluteus maximus
  • some of the fascia and muscles along the sacrum into the low back

That is a pretty long list for such a simple position to be in.  In addition to getting the benefits, squatting becomes an easy position to rest in, such that you can get the stretching with very little effort.

Knowing how good it can be for you, you might want to give it a try.  Who knows... maybe your opinon of this humble position will change.
